LAWRENCE, Kansas - Fresh off its 92-83 overtime win over Texas Tech on Tuesday, the North Texas basketball team will face its second Big 12 opponent of the week Friday night at No. 7/6 Kansas. Tip off from historic Allen Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m.
This will be the first ever meeting between the Mean Green (2-0) and the Jayhawks (2-0). As a matter of fact, Kansas is the only Big 12 team to never face NT on the hardwood.
Josh White is quickly becoming known as a "Big 12 killer" for his accolades against top competition. The senior is averaging 18.6 points per game in his career against Big 12 competition, including 32 points in the overtime win over Texas Tech on Tuesday. He also tallied 25 points in the Oklahoma State win in 2007, and 28 points a year later at No. 4 Texas.
Kansas was picked to finish second in the Big 12's annual Preseason Poll, behind only Kansas State and its 10 first-place votes. Jayhawk forward Marcus Morris was a Preseason All-Big 12 honoree. The Jayhawks have finished first or second (outright or tied) in all but one season since the Big 12 began play. The KU has 10 regular season crowns in that time and have won 53 league titles in their history.
North Texas and Kansas shared an opening-round NCAA Tournament site last season - Oklahoma City's Ford Center. No. 15 seed North Texas fell to No. 2 Kansas State, 82-62, while the No. 1 Jayhawks knocked off No. 16 Lehigh, 90-74, before being upset by No. 9 Northern Iowa, 69-67.
After its 79-44 win over Valpo on Monday Kansas has won 61 straight home games, which is the longest home winning streak in the country and just one shy of tying the school record of 62. The Jayhawks held Vaparaiso to 27.4 percent shooting in Monday night's 79-44 win. The Morris twins, Markieff and Marcus, both notched double-doubles.
