DENTON, Texas (12/15/10) - Many North Texas student-athletes were seen around campus last week completing community service projects for a freshman seminar class. Two groups put their strength training to the test by planting trees near Lovelace Stadium.
Students in Cinnamon Sheffield's UCRS 1000 Freshman Seminar class are required to complete a community service project. Sheffield, a senior associate athletic director for student services at North Texas, assigned "Keep Denton Beautiful" to her class. Four groups were asked to research the organization, plan a project and see it through to completion.
Two groups, comprised of Brelan Chancellor (football), Richard Abbe (football), Shelly Holt (soccer), Rochelle Ellis (track and field), Ash'Lynne Evans (woman's basketball), Sarah Vann (track and field) Konockus Sashington (football), Mason Y'Barbo (football) and Laura McCoy (woman's basketball) worked with the university's ground managers to plant trees near the athletic department's softball field.
North Texas student-athletes were also seen around the local malls and shopping centers volunteering their time. Every Christmas holiday, Mean Green student-athletes find time to volunteer with the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Drive. The athletes work in shifts at the Golden Triangle Mall and nearby stores to help raise money.
The North Texas Athletic Department seeks to provide opportunities for Mean Green student-athletes, coaches, and administrators to interact with the local and regional community in an effort to extend goodwill, to help fulfill specific needs, and to "give back" to our valued constituents. Past projects have included reading to children at various schools and after-school programs, neighborhood beautification projects, Habitat for Humanity and others.
