GREEN GANG: Apparently the Pit Crew and I aren't the only ones paying attention to the 7-1 start by the Mean Green basketball team. On Monday evening, NT climbed up five spots on the Mid-Major Top 25 to No. 10, an all-time high for North Texas.
The top 10 ranking puts NT among some lofty company. Gonzaga checks in at No. 2, just ahead of its West Coast Conference mate No. 4 St. Mary. Bracket Buster George Mason is at No. 7, while last year's NCAA Tournament runner up, Butler, is only two spots ahead of North Texas at No. 8.
NT, which was tabbed to unanimously win the Sun Belt West Division back in Oct., is the only Sun Belt squad recognized on the poll. Sam Houston State, North Texas' opponent on Wednesday night, is among Others Receiving Votes.
This is a nice feather in the cap for Johnny Jones & Co., and shows that others across the country are tuned in to the Mean Green's best start since 1976-77. Having a scorer like Tristan Thompson light up opponents for 21.6 points per game doesn't hurt that cause.
