DENTON, Texas -- The University of North Texas has released its 2010 football schedule, Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal announced today. The 12-game schedule will feature six home games, including non-conference matchups with teams from the Big XII Conference and Conference USA. It is the second consecutive season that North Texas will play six home games.
Following the season-opener at Clemson Sept. 4, North Texas will host Rice to open the final season at Fouts Field on Sept. 11. The Mean Green will play its final game in the 58-year old stadium against Kansas State on Nov. 27.
"As this program begins to turn the corner, it was important to schedule regionally attractive games against opponents that are competitively comparable," Villarreal said. "Our fans are familiar with Rice and Kansas State, and to be able to schedule home games against those teams is a validation that this program is moving forward."
North Texas will play at Army Sept. 18 before beginning the eight-game Sun Belt Conference schedule, which begins with a trip to south Florida to take on Florida Atlantic Sept. 25. The Mean Green will play three straight home games in early October, hosting Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas State and Florida International on consecutive weekends. The open week for North Texas comes on Oct. 23 before returning to conference action at Western Kentucky Oct. 30. A home game against defending conference champion Troy on Nov. 6 is followed by road games at Middle Tennessee on Nov. 13 and at Louisiana-Monroe Nov. 20.
North Texas will face three teams that played in postseason bowl games following the 2009 season, including Clemson which won the ACC Atlantic division and was ranked 24th in the final Associated Press poll.
