2010 Player Preview - Michael Outlaw
8/11/2010 12:00:00 AM | Football
Height: 6-0
Class: Senior
Signed: 2009 from East Mississippi Community College
2009 Key Stat: 2, Outlaw had only two touchdowns last season. Although he had five games where he caught four or more passes, the junior couldn’t find the end zone the way he would have liked to.
Why he will start: Outlaw will be among the top four receivers on September first because he has the athletic ability and knowledge of his role in this offense. He proved last year that he can get open and catch the ball when thrown at him and just needs to make the most of his opportunities in fall camp. Why he won’t start: Benny Jones and Tyler Stradford both have great fall camps. If those two both come out strong and Outlaw does nothing out of the ordinary, you could see Jones and Stradford in there instead of Outlaw. Another player that Outlaw has to keep track of is his back-up Christopher Bynes. Bynes has had a good fall camp so far and fighting for a top spot. Don’t forget: Outlaw was a highly touted JUCO receiver coming out of Mississippi. He has yet to show anything spectacular at North Texas, but those who watch him directly can see that he has the ability to bust loose when given the chance on the field. Overall: With his speed, consistent hands and route running ability, Outlaw has an opportunity to be a playmaker this year with two or three incredibly fast guys on his outside. If opposing defenses focus too much on Jackson, Stardford and Jones, Outlaw can tear through the middle of the field all day long.
