Dunbar A Candidate For The Doak Walker

DENTON, Texas - North Texas junior running back Lance Dunbar was named a Doak Walker Award Candidate today, as announced by the SMU Athletic Forum. The award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
Dunbar is on the list with 48 other top running backs from around the nation. Last season, Dunbar burst onto the scene with 1,378 yards rushing, finishing 15th in the country, despite starting only eight games.
Dunbar had 17 rushing touchdowns, which ranked fifth nationally ,and his 19 total touchdowns ranked seventh in the nation.
Dunbar rushed for 6.9 yards a carry last season which ranked second in the NCAA among backs with at least 200 carries.
As a starter, Dunbar averaged 147.5 yards a game and scored 15 touchdowns. He rushed for over 200 yards twice last season and was one of only four backs in the nation to have multiple 200-yard rushing games.
Dunbar joins Jamario Thomas as the only two running backs at North Texas to be nominated for the prestigious award. Thomas was nominated in 2006.
The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on November 10, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on November 22.
The Committee will cast a second vote beginning on November 29 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2010 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 9. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, in February 2011.
