DENTON, Texas- North Texas head football coach Todd Dodge today announced that senior Nathan Tune will be the starting quarterback for the opening game on Sept. 4 at Clemson. Tune, who made two starts last season, was chosen over sophomore quarterback Derek Thompson.
"Nathan and Derek were neck-and-neck in terms of production throughout fall camp," coach Dodge said. "We made a decision based upon Nathan's experience that he gained last season."
Tune saw action in seven games last season and passed for 646 yards and five touchdowns.
"Nathan has developed both physically and with his mental approach to the game," Dodge said. "With either quarterback we knew we had a great leader who had the capability of giving us great production."
Thompson saw action in the final game of the season at Arkansas State and threw for 60 yards and on touchdown.
"It was important to us to choose one guy and for the team and the coaching staff to rally around that decision," Dodge said. "Nathan knows that he has the full support of everyone on this team and I expect him to respond accordingly."
