University of North Texas Athletics
2010 Player Preview - Darius Carey
8/5/2010 12:00:00 AM | Football
Height: 5-10
Class: Sophomore
Signed: 2009 from Helen Cox High School (New Orleans, La.)
2009 Key Stat: 4, Carey caught four touchdowns during the 2009 season and emerged as a viable threat from the slot receiver position. His athleticism and ability to make people miss tackles is something that will prove valuable as he continues to be a large part of the Mean Green passing game.
Why he will start: With his speed and ability it's a safe bet to say that Carey will be among the starters when North Texas makes it to Clemson for the first game. Carey showed the upside the coaches hoped for last season and has no reason to not continue to shine in 2010.
Why he won't start: One of two simple reasons. The offense starts under center or he gets hurt during the fall.
Don't forget: With two very fast receivers on either side of him (Jackson and Stradford), Carey will have a lot of ground to find some open field through the middle. When he can do that he can become a deep scoring threat.
Overall: He has all the assets to be a stud for North Texas for the next three years if he can stay healthy. Speed, hands and versatility all combine to make Carey the real deal. He can play receiver, running back, return kicks or punts and even run the "Saints" formation as the quarterback on occasion. It's safe to say that if everything goes as planned, you'll be hearing his name a lot for the next few years.
