Game Notes
TROY, Ala. - The winningest players in North Texas history, Josh White and Tristan Thompson, will look to up their school-record 78 career wins in a rematch of the 2010 Sun Belt Tournament championship game at Troy on Saturday night.
Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. and is being televised on the Sun Belt Network (CST in the Southeast, ESPN Full Court package nationwide, and on ESPN3.com) and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
Not only are Thompson and White the winningest players in NT history, but they are about to be the highest scoring teammates as well. The seniors have combined to score 2,820 points, which is just 24 shy of Fred Mitchell (1,538) and Melvin Davis (1,306) who tallied a school-record 2,844 points from 1975-78.
Thompson is one of just 10 players in the nation to hit at least 100 free throws this year. The senior ranks 4th in the country with 108 this year, and is shooting 83.7 percent from the stripe, which ranks 6th in the SBC. Thompson ranks 10th in career scoring at NT with 1,324 points.
NT is ranked No. 10 on the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll this week - just one slot shy of the program's all-time high. NT began the season at its then-high of No. 15 on the year's inaugural poll, and reached No. 9 last week.
North Texas leads the overall series with Troy, 6-2, including a 2-1 mark in Troy and a 1-0 record at neutral sites. NT and Troy first met in 2006 in the Trojans' first season in the Sun Belt Conference. The Mean Green has won the last two meetings with Troy.
Troy is coming off a shocking 82-68 win over perennial Sun Belt power Western Kentucky on Thursday. Vernon Taylor led four Trojans in double figures with 20 points.
The SBC's top assist squads will be facing off when NT and Troy take the court. The Trojans average 14.2 per game, and NT isn't far behind at 13.5. Troy's Will Weathers leads the league with 6.6 per game.
The Trojans are no strangers to the 3-ball. Troy makes more 3-pointers per game - 9.6 to be exact - than any other team in the Sun Belt. Regis Huddleston is the biggest culprit with 2.7 makes per game.
