Game Notes
DENTON, Texas – The anticipated debut of North Texas freshman Tony Mitchell is will occur at the Super Pit on Sunday when the Mean Green takes on Jackson State at 7 p.m.
The Dallas Pinkston High School product was a Slam Magazine All-American and the Dallas Morning News 2010 Player of the Year after scoring 20.5 points, 13.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 4.1 blocks per game as a senior.
Ranked as the No. 2 forward in the nation by Rivals.com in 2010, Mitchell was the leading rebounder (7.6 per game) and shot blocker (1.9 per game) for the U19 USA Basketball squad at the FIBA World Championships in July. He was recently ranked as the No. 4 center in college basketball by Lindy’s, and the CBS Sports No. 3 “Under the Radar” player in the NCAA.
Mitchell joins a North Texas team that is 56-7 (88.9 percent) in home non-conference games under Johnny Jones, including wins in 15 straight and 31-of-32. As a matter of fact, North Texas has never lost more than one non-conference home game in Jones’ 11 seasons.
North Texas has dominated the offensive glass this year, beating all but one of its opponents in the category. As a matter of fact, NT is averaging a 16.0 to 8.9 edge on the offensive boards this year. Kedrick Hogans ranks second in the Sun Belt with 3.3 offensive rebounds per game.
Hogans, a Third Team Preseason All-SBC selection, is only 10 blocks away from tying his former teammate Quincy Williams (2004-08)for second place in NT history in career blocks with 98. Hogans is averaging a block per game (9 total on the year), and could still reach Jeffrey Simpson’s (2004-06) school record of 119 blocks.
