DENTON, Texas – USA Basketball standout and North Texas freshman forward Tony Mitchell has met the NCAA’s eligibility criteria, and will suit up Sunday against Jackson State at the Super Pit.
Mitchell enrolled at North Texas in the spring, but couldn’t become eligible to play until he completed two semesters of coursework. His first practice with North Texas was on Saturday following his participation in the annual Johnny Jones Free Youth Basketball Clinic.
The Dallas Pinkston High School product was a Slam Magazine All-American and the Dallas Morning News 2010 Player of the Year after scoring 20.5 points, 13.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 4.1 blocks per game as a senior.
Ranked as the No. 2 forward in the nation by Rivals.com in 2010, Mitchell was the leading rebounder (7.6 per game) and shot blocker (1.9 per game) for the U19 USA Basketball squad at the FIBA World Championships in July. He was recently ranked as the No. 4 center in college basketball by Lindy’s, and the CBS Sports No. 3 “Under the Radar” player in the NCAA.
Mitchell joins a North Texas team that is 56-7 (88.9 percent) in home non-conference games under Jones, including wins in 15 straight and 31-of-32. The Mean Green will face off against Jackson State on Sunday, Grambling State on Tuesday and LSU on Thursday – all at the Super Pit.
