North Texas Falls In Doubleheader

DENTON, Texas (3/9/11) - The Missouri State softball team snapped the Mean Green's five-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. North Texas lost by scores of 1-0 and 8-5.
The Mean Green falls to 11-8 overall, while the Bears improve to 5-6. Missouri State leads the series against North Texas, 4-1.
North Texas was hurt by six errors in the combined two games. Only three of the nine runs scored against the Mean Green were earned.
Brittany Simmons (5-5) took the loss in the first game, despite striking out seven and giving up six hits. The lone run scored in the game was unearned. In the fifth inning, Tyler Porter reached on a Mean Green error. The next batter knocked Porter home with a double to score the game-winning run.
North Texas outscored the Bears in the second game, 11-8, but was hurt by four errors.
The Mean Green took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off a Bears error. Mallory Cantler knocked in the run with an RBI double. After Missouri State tied the game in the top of the second, North Texas took back the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring off a wild pitch.
The game unraveled in the third inning for the Mean Green. Three hits and four errors contributed to a six-run inning for the Bears.
North Texas came back with solo runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Caitlin Grimes went 3-for-3 in the nightcap with one RBI. Lesley Hirsch and Hayley Siebman each contributed two hits.
Ashley Kirk took the loss for the Mean Green despite giving up just two earned runs.
North Texas opens conference play this weekend when it faces No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette.
