Grimes Homers In Loss

Bowling Green, Ky. (4/2/11) - The North Texas softball team outhit the Hilltoppers in both games of a doubleheader, but WKU swept the Mean Green on Saturday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex. WKU took the first game, 5-3, and won the nightcap, 2-1.
The Mean Green falls to 15-20 and 2-9 in the Sun Belt, while the Hilltoppers improve to 20-15 and 3-8 in the conference. WKU holds a 16-13 lead in the series. The Mean Green has won three of the last five.
North Texas outhit the Hilltoppers 17-14 in the combined two games, but the Mean Green left 19 baserunners stranded on base.
Caitlin Grimes tied the second game, 1-1, in the fifth inning with a solo home run, but two hits and a Mean Green error led to the game-winning run by WKU in the bottom of the inning. The error extended the inning for the Hilltoppers.
The Mean Green left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings.
Mariza Martinez knocked in a run in the first inning to give North Texas a 1-0 lead in the opening game. WKU responded with three runs in the bottom of the third off a solo home run and a two-RBI double.
Renae Bromley brought home a run with an RBI single in the fourth but WKU added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to seal the win. North Texas left nine baserunners stranded in the game.
WKU was able to string together hits in the second game to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. After the home run by Grimes, the Mean Green was unable to bring runners home in the final innings.
Courtney Bradshaw led the Mean Green offense with five hits.
Ashley Kirk (6-10) took the loss in the second game for the Mean Green, while Brittany Simmons (8-9) fell in the opening game. Kirk and Simmons pitched three innings in each of the two games.
North Texas rounds out the series with WKU with a third game on Sunday, April 3 at 12 p.m.
