North Texas, coming off its first 20-win season and West Division title since 2006, led late in both the first and second sets, but couldn't hold on. Aside from Morton's 10 kills and 20 digs, the senior also added a match-high four aces.
"We put ourselves in position to win the match, and I'm proud of our team for that," said North Texas head coach Ken Murczek. "We had our best serving night of the spring, and Shelley was all over the place. We just simply couldn't close out the first two sets, and that will be a major focus for us heading into the fall."
The SMU blocking front kept the Mean Green at bay with 18 total blocks, and held NT to .048 hitting as a team. Courtney Manning led the Ponies with 18 kills.
Kayla Saey was efficient as the Mean Green setter with 33 assists, while Sarah Willey led all players with 31 digs. Chrissy Johnson reached double figure digs with 10.
