This 17-player training camp will be used to select the 12-man roster that will represent the United States at the U19 World Championships from June 30-July 10 in Latvia. The training camp runs from June 17-24, and the 12-man roster is expected to be announced on June 19.
"We are extremely excited for Tony and the opportunity he has to once again compete for a spot on the USA Basketball team," said North Texas head coach Johnny Jones. "Not only are we happy that he has a chance to represent the country, but it will also allow him to sharpen and refine his skills against some of the best competition in the world."
Mitchell is no stranger to representing his country in international competition. He averaged 8.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while helping the 2010 USA U18 squad capture a gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championships last July in San Antonio, Texas.
The lone Texas and Sun Belt Conference invitee, Mitchell joins representatives from the ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Big East, Pac 10, Conference USA and Missouri Valley. The 2010 Dallas Morning News Player of the Year was considered the No. 12 player in the nation out of Pinkston High School in Dallas, where he averaged 20.5 points and 13.2 rebounds per game.
Mitchell joins a Mean Green recruiting class that already boasted four of the top 30 players in Texas according to texashoops.com, and ranked as high as No. 31 nationally on hoopscooponline.com. NT has won 20 or more games in each of the last five years, and owns two Sun Belt titles and NCAA Tournament berths over that span.
