No. 57 - Jamario Thomas Scampers for 57 Yards Against Colorado
An injury to defending rushing champion Patrick Cobbs saw true freshman Jamario Thomas forced into the lineup for the third game of 2004, a road tilt at Colorado. Thomas had only carried the ball twice in his career to that point, running for a loss of one yard and no gain in the fourth quarter against Texas a couple weeks prior.
After forcing Colorado to go three-and-out and an 18-yard pass from Scott Hall to Johnny Quinn on North Texas' first play from scrimmage, Thomas' number was called and the largely unknown recruit from Longview broke off a 57-yard touchdown run, and gave the Mean Green a 7-0 lead.
Thomas finished the game with 247 rushing yards and two touchdown runs, a remarkable total for a player who was not even on the radar screen of most fans and media before the game. Thomas would eventually lead the NCAA in rushing in 2004, and the Mean Green would go on to win the Sun Belt Conference and play in the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl.
