No. 44- Not A Day To Rush
It was an incredible day for defense. September 24, 1966 North Texas hosted UTEP, or Texas Western as they were known as at the time. UTEP quarterback Billy Stevens and the Miners would pass for 300 yards that day, but the big number of the day was -44 yards. That was the grant total of rushing for UTEP that day.
North Texas held the Miners to minus 44 yards on the ground and was able to ground out a 12-9 victory. The game saw North Texas fall down 9-0, but 12 unanswered points gave the Mean Green the win.
The -44 yards remains a school record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a single game. Stevens, the UTEP QB, accounted for -82 yards rushing that day. Sacks weren't an official stat back then, but he went down unofficially nine times that day.
The rest of the Miners didn't do too much on the ground either as they were held to 38 yards on 25 carries.
The game against the Miners also happened to be the second of the career for defensive tackle Joe Greene, who before the year it was written in the media guide "should be able to handle the tackle spot" began his career.
