No. 7 - 7-OT Thriller That Scrambled The Press Box
Remember the 7-OT edge-of-your-seat thriller the Mean Green played against FIU back in 2006? You know, the longest game ever played in college football history! How could anyone ever forget that night at Fouts Field.
North Texas, which was the only Division IA team to have never played an overtime contest, went up by three points with two minutes to play thanks to a Johnny Quinn 4-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Meager. The Golden Panthers answered back with a 28-yard field goal with two seconds on the fourth quarter clock to send it into OT.
Up in the press box we didn’t know what to do – literally. Not one member of the stat crew had ever been apart of an overtime game, so we were forced to blow the dust off the NCAA statistics manual to figure out how to properly code the game in our stat computers.
It didn’t go well for us up in the press box (we still didn’t have everything straightened out when we gave up and left at 2:30 a.m.), but luckily everything worked out on the field. The two teams combined for 13 field goal attempts in the overtimes alone, including the 34-yard winner from Denis Hopovac in OT No. 7.
