DENTON, Texas - North Texas head football coach Dan McCarney has announced the hiring of Noah Joseph who will coach safeties with the Mean Green. Joseph, who spent the last five seasons with Montana State, was a graduate assistant coach under McCarney in 2002 at Iowa State.
"We are excited about having Noah join our staff and help build this program like he did at Montana State over the past several years" McCarney said. "Even as a young coach when he was with us at Iowa State I knew he was going to be successful. He is a tireless recruiter and has an energy that his players will really respond to."
Joseph will take over for Anthony Weaver who left North Texas after one season for a job coaching the defensive line with the New York Jets of the NFL.
"Coach Weaver did a tremendous job of helping us build the foundation of this program," McCarney said. "He had a chance to be reunited with Rex Ryan, who was his position coach with the Baltimore Ravens, and it is a great opportunity for him professionally. I know he really enjoyed his time at North Texas and it was a difficult decision for him."
Joseph was the Co-Defensive Coordinator last season and coached the secondary in 2011. Last season the Bobcats secondary was first in the Big Sky Conference in pass efficiency defense and pass defense and ranked 18th and 22nd in the nation in those categories. Defensively Montana State finished 27th in total defense last season and had 44 total sacks, which led the Big Sky Conference and ranked seventh in the nation.
Joseph was also the recruiting coordinator for Montana State. He helped transition all-league safety Kevin Retoriano to cornerback during fall camp in 2009, then enjoyed Retoriano's second all-conference season. He helped Arnold Briggs make a similar transition, and after missing a season with a knee injury Briggs repaid the Bobcats with a Second Team All-Big Sky season last fall
In all five seasons at Montana State, Joseph coaches a first- or second-team all-league cornerback or safety.
Joseph coached at Eastern Illinois from 2003-06, producing one of the top pass efficiency defenses in the nation in 2005. He also worked as a graduate assistant at Drake (2000), Eastern Kentucky (2001) and Iowa State (2002).
A former player at Drake, he earned Academic All-Pioneer Football League honors and was captain of the Drake football team as a senior in 1998. Joseph, who was on the 2000 Drake coaching staff, holds the Bulldog school record for longest interception return of 100 yards at Wayne (Neb.) State in 1997.
He received his degree from Drake in 1999 and a master's degree from Iowa State in 2003.
