Lafayette, La. (3/11/12) - Ashley McCarroll hit two home runs, but it was not enough to keep up with the Ragin' Cajuns as the No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette softball team won the final game of the conference series against North Texas, 11-4, on Sunday afternoon at Cajun Field.
The Ragin' Cajuns remain undefeated at 23-0 and improve to 3-0 in conference play. The Mean Green falls to 8-13 and 0-3 in the Sun Belt as ULL swept the three-game series.
McCarroll tied the game, 3-3, with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Louisiana-Lafayette responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning and three runs in fifth to take back the lead for good.
McCarroll hit her second home run of the game in the sixth. The sophomore went 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and two RBI. It is the second time this season that McCarroll has hit two home runs in a single game. She hit two long balls in the March 3 game against Austin Peay.
Ashley Kirk (1-7) took the loss in the game. She relieved starter Brittany Simmons in the third inning and gave up four runs off three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
ULL scored three runs in the second inning, the first time it has scored first in the weekend series. Simmons walked the first two batters and two singles and a stolen base contributed to three runs.
North Texas responded with two runs in the next inning. Lisa Johnson and Maddelyn Fraley both knocked in runs for the Mean Green. McCarroll would tie the game in the fourth, but the Ragin' Cajuns offense exploded for eight runs to seal the win.
Lesley Hirsch went 3-for-4 in the game with one run scored.
North Texas returns to action when it faces Baylor on Wednesday, March 14 at 6 p.m. in Waco, Texas.
