ULM Takes Both Wins From Mean Green

Monroe, La. (4/14/12) - The North Texas softball team could not hold early leads as ULM came back to win both games of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex. The Warhawks won both games by scores of 2-1.
The Mean Green falls to 18-21 and 8-8-1 in the conference, while ULM improves to 18-18 and 5-9 in the Sun Belt.
North Texas took early 1-0 leads in both games, but the Warhawks capitalized on Mean Green errors to steal both wins. The Mean Green outhit the Warhawks, 14-7, in the combined two games and left 18 runners stranded on base.
Ashley Kirk (6-9) picked up the loss in the first game despite pitching a one-hitter. She allowed just one earned run off one hit in six innings of work. She walked four batters and struck out seven Warhawks. Brittany Simmons (9-9) took the loss in the second game despite not giving up an earned run. She allowed five hits in six innings of work.
In the second game, Brooke Foster and Lisa Johnson hit back-to-back singles in the third inning, setting up Maddelyn Fraley, who knocked in one run with an RBI single. Fraley plated both of the Mean Green's runs in the doubleheader. She leads the team with 39 RBI.
ULM tied the game in the fourth inning when Janel Salanoa singled up the middle, scoring Elena DiMattia from third. DiMattia reached base on a Mean Green error. The Warhawks took the lead in the fifth off an RBI single by DiMattia. Miyuki Navarrete scored from third after reaching base on an error.
In the first game, North Texas took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of a Fraley RBI single. Megan Rupp scored after leading off the game with a walk.
ULM tied the game with a walk and an RBI double. Salanoa led off the fourth inning with a walk. She stole second and scored off an RBI double by Alexis Cacioppi. The Warhawks took the lead in the fifth when MacKenzie Miller scored from third on a sacrifice bunt. Miller reached base on a throwing error by the Mean Green.
North Texas threatened the seventh inning with runners on first and third, but Caitlin Grimes flied out to end the game.
With her two walks today, Johnson broke her own school record for walks in a season with 31. She also holds the career walks record with 99.
North Texas and ULM play the third game of the series on Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
