There's More Than Football In This Year's Green-White Weekend
NORTH TEXAS FOOTBALL GREEN-WHITE SPRING GAMEThe 2012 Green and White Spring Game takes place at 2 p.m. on April 21 at Apogee Stadium. The much-anticipated spring game marks the end of North Texas Football's spring practice and provides vibrant head coach Dan McCarney with an opportunity to show off the progress his young and enthusiastic Mean Green football team has made in preparation for the 2012 fall season.
The 2 p.m. kickoff coordinates with a host of other on campus activities including North Texas Softball, Sun Belt Conference Championship Tennis, athletic surplus equipment garage sale, recruitment programs for admitted and prospective Greek students, American Cancer Society Relay for Life event, and the Union Program Council sponsored post-game concert featuring Reckless Kelly. There are activities for all including a full day of Mean Green Tailgating by fans, donors and students alike. ATHLETIC SURPLUS GARAGE SALENorth Texas Athletics is cleaning out its closets and will host a surplus equipment and apparel garage sale at Apogee Stadium prior to and during the April 21 Spring Game. The Mean Green Nation can look forward to a never before opportunity to secure brand new to slightly used apparel and equipment for pennies on the retail-market dollar.
The sale will commence at 12:30 p.m. when the gates of Apogee Stadium open for the annual Green-White Spring game. A plethora of items will be available for purchase by the general public, including old jerseys, relatively new jerseys, sweat tops and pants, shoes, cleats, polos, warm ups, T-shirts, socks, limited-edition New Orleans Bowl footballs and much more in a garage-sale style display. All items will be set up just inside of Gate 2 adjacent to the Athletic Ticket Office and Mean Green Gear Stadium Store. The sale will run at least through halftime of the spring game. Prices will range from $1 to $30 depending on item. That's Saturday April 21, Gate 2 of Apogee Stadium, don't miss the athletic surplus equipment and apparel garage sale.
SUN BELT CONFERENCE TENNIS TOURNAMENT
The 2012 Sun Belt Conference Tennis Tournament, hosted by North Texas Athletics at the Waranch Tennis Complex, will take place April 19-22.
North Texas Head Coach Sujay Lama and his women's team, which have been ranked in the top 50 the majority of the year, are excited to host this annual event in Denton. Look forward to great Mean Green Tennis action all through the tournament but especially in conjunction with Saturday's festivities as North Texas is projected to play at 9 a.m. that morning, and is the overwhelming favorite to secure a bid to the NCAA tournament.
North Texas will open play Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday's women's semifinals are at 9 a.m., and the championship dual match will take place Sunday at 1 p.m.
NORTH TEXAS SOFTBALL vs. SOUTH ALABAMA
Mean Green Softball will play host to South Alabama for a Sun Belt weekend series, with a Saturday doubleheader on April 21 and a single game on Sunday.
Saturday's games are scheduled for 4 and 6 p.m., wth the final game of the weekend series at noon on Sunday. All games will be played at Lovelace Stadium off of South Bonnie Brae.
North Texas, led by the power-hitting duo of Maddelyn Fraley and Caitlin Grimes and pitchers Ashley Kirk and Brittany Simmons, has surged to fourth place in the Sun Belt standings and is in striking distance of second place. This weekend's opponent, South Alabama, is currently in second in the Belt with a 27-12 season record, led by a pitching staff with a team earned run average of 1.98, lowest in the league.
RECKLESS KELLY CONCERTThis year's spring game features a post-game concert sponsored by the Union Program Council. UPC has worked diligently to provide students, fans and other guests with the Austin-based band Reckless Kelly.
Reckless Kelly is an exciting, heart-warming Texas soul band known for straddling rock and country songs. The post-game concert will start immediately after the conclusion of the spring game, anticipated to be approximately 3:30 p.m.
A stage will be erected in the West stands of Apogee Stadium, allowing fans and music enthusiasts' tremendous seating and great sight lines for the 90-minute free post-game concert.
GREEK PREVIEWThe Office of Greek Life will host the inaugural Greek Preview Day on April 21 in conjunction with the annual Green & White Spring Football Game. Greek Preview is a day-long orientation program which provides an opportunity for incoming freshmen and transfer students to create a connection with the university Greek community. Prospective students can explore an organization fair, attend a welcome session, short panel discussion and specialized break-out sessions which cover Greek recruitment, traditions and the value of membership in a fraternal organization. After a tour of on-campus Greek housing, students and parents are invited to attend a tailgate lunch on The Hill prior to the Green and White Spring Football Game at Apogee Stadium. Immediately following the game, all participants are invited to attend the Reckless Kelly concert sponsored by the Union Program Council at Apogee Stadium.

RELAY FOR LIFE OF DENTONThe Relay for Life of Denton will be held at Fouts Field from April 21, 2012, 3 p.m. to April 22 at 6 a.m. Relay for Life is a life-changing overnight event that gives everyone in communities and campus around the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. GOMEANGREEN.COM FLAG FOOTBALLThe annual GoMeanGreen.com flag football game will also take place in the new home of North Texas Football being Apogee stadium. All proceeds for the event organized and hosted by GoMeanGreen.com will benefit the Andrew Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. in Apogee and will include former Mean Green student athletes in action, and a silent auction.
