DENTON, Texas - The North Texas football team went through its first scrimmage of the spring season this morning that featured some fireworks on both sides of the ball. North Texas went through a series of nearly 100 plays, that saw the offensive, defense, and special teams work on different situations.
The biggest play of the scrimmage came right out of the gate. After a turnover on the first series, the offense found the end zone when quarterback Derek Thompson hit wide receiver Ivan Delgado for a 70-yard touchdown strike.
Wide receiver Brelan Chancellor also had a big morning with two receptions for over 30 yards. The running backs saw a heavy rotation of Brandin Byrd, Jeremy Brown, Zac Whitfield, and Antoinne Jimmerson.
Byrd had a long reception out of the back field early in the scrimmage while Brown had a 24-yard touchdown run. Jimmerson's best run of the day came on a third-down, which he turned into a 30-yard run.
Defensively Marcus Trice and Kenny Buyers had interceptions. Trice had his on a deflection off a pass from Thompson early in the scrimmage and Buyers grabbed a pick from Brent Osborn.
The North Texas defense shined late in the scrimmage during the two-minute drills. The first and second-team offense had the ball at the 45 yard line with 50 seconds left and the defense held the offense without a first down on both series.
The Mean Green will have one more scrimmage next Saturday morning before the spring game on April 21.
North Texas will resume spring practice Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and all practices are open to the public.
