Softball Goes 0-2 In Day One Action

DENTON, Texas (2/15/13) - The North Texas softball team went 0-2 in the first day of action at the Lovelace Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Mean Green lost to Oklahoma State, 8-0, in its opening game and then fell to Nebraska-Omaha, 4-3, in the nightcap.
The Mean Green falls to 3-4 overall. Oklahoma State (3-3) went 1-1 in tournament play, while the Mavericks (7-0) are 2-0.
The Cowgirls allowed just four Mean Green hits in their shutout victory, while North Texas came back twice against the Mavericks but came up just short in the seventh inning. In both games, the Mean Green put runners on base but missed the timely hits. North Texas left 15 runners stranded in the combined two games.
Amber Lutmer gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead in the third inning with her fifth home run of the season. North Texas tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Taylor Schoblocher reached base on an error and advanced to second on a Jordan Terry single. Jackie Miller plated the first run with a double down the left field side, and Dani Hoff tied the game with an RBI single.
The Mavericks regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly after loading the bases. Mara Eeman tacked on an additional run with an RBI single, and that run proved to be the gamewinner.
Hoff began the seventh-inning rally with a one-out double. Karly Williams brought her home with a single up the middle, cutting the lead to one run, 4-3. The Mean Green left Williams stranded on base after the Mavericks ended the rally with a groundout.
North Texas outhit Nebraska-Omaha, 7-6. Lauren Poole took the loss for the Mean Green in her first start of the season. She pitched six innings and gave up four runs off six hits.
OSU's Simone Freeman pitched a four-hit shutout against the Mean Green in NT's first game of the day. Freeman pitched seven innings and struck out nine batters.
The OSU offense scored eight runs off eight hits and was aided by three Mean Green errors.
Samantha Chisman drove in the Cowgirls' two runs in the second inning with a double and then posted a two-RBI single in the third to put OSU ahead, 4-0.
Tarah Ettinger drove in two runs with a double in the seventh to seal the win. She went 3-for-3 in the game with two walks.
Schoblocher led the Mean Green with two hits against the Cowgirls. Ashley Kirk took the loss for the Mean Green against OSU, allowing four runs off four hits in 2.2 innings of work.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday when it faces Iowa and Dayton, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Lovelace Stadium.
