Jaguars Sweep Doubleheader Against Mean Green

Mobile, Ala. (4/13/13) - The No. 23 South Alabama softball team swept a doubleheader against North Texas behind a walk-off home run in the first game and a run-rule in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field. The Jaguars won the first game, 3-2, and then secured a 12-1 victory in five innings in the second.
The Jaguars improve to 37-7 and 13-3 in the conference, while North Texas falls to 18-19 and 6-9 in the Sun Belt. North Texas and USA will play the third game in the series on Sunday, April 14 at 11 a.m.
Blair Johnson hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Jaguars to a win in the opening game. The Jaguars used an eight-run second inning to jump ahead of the Mean Green in the nightcap.
South Alabama took early leads in both games. North Texas was able to tie the score in the sixth inning of the opening game with two runs.
Dani Hoff led off and reached base on a fielding error. Jen Beardsley pinch ran for Hoff and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Taylor Schoblocher hit a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Bryana Wade plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to right, and Karly Williams tied the game with a triple to right field.
Johnson led off the bottom of the seventh and won the game for the Jaguars with a home run to right field.
North Texas stranded seven runners in the first game, included leaving the bases loaded in the third inning.
Hannah Campbell (17-7) picked up the opening win. She gave up two runs off seven hits. Neither run was earned. Ashley Kirk (8-7) took the loss. She gave up three runs off seven hits. She struck out eight batters.
Julie Moss gave the Jaguars a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap with a home run. Clara Bowen added a third run with an RBI single.
The Jaguars scored eight runs off five hits in the second inning to put the Mean Green in a hole. Haley Fagan and Meghan Collins both plated two-RBI singles, and Britany Campbell sealed the inning with a grand slam.
South Alabama outhit the Mean Green, 12-2. Schoblocher scored the Mean Green's only run with a solo home run in the third. She posted three hits in the doubleheader.
Brittany Simmons (6-6) took the loss for the Mean Green. She gave up five runs off five hits in 1.1 innings of work.
