HOUSTON - The North Texas volleyball team will compete in its fourth-straight Conference USA tournament beginning on Friday with a quarterfinals showdown against Southern Miss at 7 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse on the campus of Rice University.
The Mean Green (13-16, 7-7 C-USA) enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed, and will square off against the Golden Eagles (22-7, 11-3 C-USA) who enter on a five-match winning streak and as the No. 2 seed.
This will be the third meeting between North Texas and Southern Miss this season. The Golden Eagles secured identical 3-1 victories in the two regular season conference matches.
North Texas will rely on first-team All-C-USA players Holly Milam and Amanda Chamberlain to get over the hump against Southern Miss. Chamberlain led the team with 302 kills and a .372 attack percentage during the regular season. Milam came on strong in conference play for the Mean Green, finishing the season with 10 or more kills in North Texas' final 10 matches. Milam paced the Mean Green with an average of 3.57 kills per set and 189 kills in conference.
North Texas posted below average numbers against Southern Miss, hitting .198 in the two matches versus the Golden Eagles opposed to a .261 mark against other C-USA foes. On the defensive end, Southern Miss hit .299 against the Mean Green, nearly 75 points higher than the .225 average North Texas allowed to the rest of the conference.
Serving will be a focal point of the match, as the Mean Green were aced 17 times and only delivered three aces of their own in the previous meetings.
Stopping Southern Miss' Stephany Purdue will be high on the list for North Texas' defense, as she dominated both matches, collecting 30 kills in the process. Catherine Repsher will be close behind, as she hit .570 and logged nine blocks in the regular season matches.
With a victory, the Mean Green will advance to the semifinal round on Saturday, and would face the winner of Marshall and Rice at 5 p.m.
