During the 1982-83 season, Lyons broke the school record for most points with 728 points and is still the only player in school history to have 700 or more points in a season. Lyons averaged 24.3 points per game - still the third highest scoring average in school history.
Lyons also set the school record with 47 points against LA Tech during that season and scored over 30 points five times. Lyons was the leading scorer in 24 of the 30 games and was the top rebounder in 15 games. Lyons helped North Texas to the Southland Conference championship game, where the Mean Green lost to Lamar.
