DENTON - The North Texas volleyball team begins the 2017 campaign as the host of the North Texas Invitational, when the Mean Green face off against Tulsa at 5 p.m. Friday at the North Texas Volleyball Center.
The tournament also includes Montana and UTEP, who will cap off Friday's tournament action at 7 p.m. North Texas will face Montana at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Mean Green have thrived on their home court with a 40-16 record under head coach Andrew Palileo, and haven't dropped a home opener since 2009, when it fell in a five-set thriller to UT San Antonio.
Palileo is set to begin his fifth season at the helm of the program, coming off a down year that ended with a 13-19 record and a 7-7 mark in C-USA play, good for seventh in the league. For the second straight year, the team was picked to finish sixth in the Conference USA Preseason Poll.
North Texas returns nine letterwinners from last season, including the top five point scorers and four starters. Six incoming freshmen round out the 15-player roster. The crop of returners is headlined by preseason All-Conference USA selections Amanda Chamberlain and Holly Milam. The duo earned first team all-conference honors in 2016, and Milam was named to the all-conference second team in 2015.
