Men's Basketball Finishes Road Trip At Southern Miss Saturday

DENTON - The North Texas men's basketball team looks to salvage its road trip with a matchup at Southern Miss on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m. at the Reed Green Coliseum.
The Mean Green (10-9, 3-3 C-USA) dropped another close Conference USA game against LA Tech on Thursday, Jan. 18. North Texas was holding a one-point lead at 65-64 before Louisiana Tech's freshman Anthony Duruji was fouled and hit two free throws to snap the Mean Green's road winning streak at three. Sophomore guard Roosevelt Smart finished with 23 points off seven three-pointers, including a go-ahead triple with 7.4 seconds left.
Smart has been spectacular in league play sitting second in scoring at 23.7 points per game and has scored in double-figures in all six games. Smart leads the league in three-pointers made with 72, fourth nationally, and three-pointers made per game at 3.79 (sixth in the nation).
Sophomore Ryan Woolridge dished out 10 assists for the third time in his last four games. Woolridge has jumped to fourth in assists per game at 5.6 and is tied for first during league play at 7.2 assists. Woolridge became the 24th player at North Texas to distribute 100 or more assists in a season and is 32nd in the nation with 107 total.
North Texas has played five of its six C-USA games down to the final possession with the six games being decided by 15 points. The Mean Green sit in a tie for sixth place with Florida Atlantic (3-3).
About the Opponent: Southern Miss
This will be the 28th meeting between the two teams with Southern Miss holding a 21-6 record and is 8-1 at home in the all-time series.
Last season, Southern Miss won 76-53 in a wire-to-wire victory at the Super Pit on Feb. 25, 2017. Derail Green had 17 points. A.J. Lawson had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Golden Eagles scored 47 first-half points off eight three-pointers to build a 17-point lead.
In the last meeting in Hattiesburg, Southern Miss won 75-65 on Jan. 19, 2017. Ryan Woolridge had 15 points and eight rebounds. Quinton Campbell finished with a game-high 26 points and five rebounds.
