DENTON – The 2018-19 Mean Green women's basketball team is settling into its fourth season under head coach Jalie Mitchell and looking to build off a successful 2017-18 campaign in which the team amassed the most wins in 16 years while advancing to the conference tournament semifinal, a feat which had not been accomplished since 2001-02 when Mitchell was a senior at North Texas.
"My hope is to continue to improve in our fourth year," Mitchell said. "Each season has brought more and more success. I believe it's possible for us to keep trending in the right direction. The goal has and will always be 20-plus wins and a conference championship."
Each season, the Mean Green identify a motto for the team to buy into and rally around.
"Our mantra for this year is 'Do The Work.' It's all about keeping our heads down with the understanding that our success is dependent on the amount and quality of work we put in," Mitchell said. "We get after it daily and make sure that anyone or anything that serves to distract us from our goals is put to bed as soon as possible."
The 2018-19 squad includes a solid core of returners as well as a talented group of newcomers.
"The strengths of this year's team include experience and leadership, and our pride is at an all time high. We have an extremely passionate, resilient, and invested group that strives for excellence," Mitchell said. "I love how they push and encourage one another to get better.
"Our newcomers are all in and have worked hard to make sure they are ready to help make this our best season yet. All except one have some experience past high school, which is a big plus when it comes to handling the pace and physicality of the game at our level. They will be counted on a great deal. We cannot accomplish our goals without everyone's best.
"Each one of our players has the ability to make an impact in our league. The expectations are high for Terriell Bradley as a returning first-team all-conference player. We have two other senior returning starters in Brittany Smith and Grace Goodhart who are looking to contribute at a much higher level in the final season of their playing careers. Trena Mims is our final returning starter. She has improved on all accounts since last season, and we look forward to what she will bring to the table in her sophomore campaign."
The first test for the Mean Green is set for Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. in an exhibition against Mary Hardin-Baylor. The regular season begins Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Super Pit when North Texas faces Mid-America Christian.
