DENTON – Coming off a successful fall season against quality competition, UNT women's golf coach Michael Akers added to his roster by inking Marija Jucmane to a national letter of intent.
Jucmane, 18, hails from Riga, Latvia, which is the same hometown as UNT graduate assistant coach Krista Puisite. She won the Latvian Junior Championship this year and has 10 championships on the junior circuit to her name.
"We are very excited to add Marija Jucmane to our roster for 2019," Akers said. "Marija has been on my radar for years. She has a good swing coach in Latvia, who I have known for years. I had a great experience coaching Krista and Mara Puisite from Latvia (at Texas State), and I know Marija will produce similar results. Latvia has limited golf resources. They literally have four golf courses in the entire country.
"Marija is excited to get to UNT and play many different great courses as well as enjoying weather where she can train outdoors throughout the year," Akers added.
Jucmane has broken the top 1,000 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and Aakers said he's excited to see how much she can grow as a golfer once she arrives on campus and has more resources available.
"I am excited to see how far she can go playing the very strong tournament schedule we have and experiencing the positive environment we provide," Akers said.
