The Matchup
North Texas is 8-0 for the first time since the start of the 1921-22 season and has gotten to this point with dominating defensive performances. UNT's opponents have only mustered up an average of 55.4 point per game this season, which puts the Mean Green defense in the top 10 in the nation. On Nov. 17, North Texas held Maryland Eastern Shore to just 34 points. That's the fewest points a Mean Green team has held an opponent since the 1940 season.
Tuesday, UNT will likely face its toughest test to date this season in the Oklahoma Sooners who are coming off an exciting week at the Battle 4 Atlantis where they beat Florida and Dayton in Paradise Island, Bahamas.
Oklahoma, who beat UNT last season 82-72 in Norman, Oklahoma, only blemish so far on the young season was a 20-point loss to No. 25 Wisconsin on Thursday in the Bahamas.
The Sooners are led by senior Christian James who is averaging 20.8 points per game and is the only OU player averaging double digits. James was a freshman in 2016 when Oklahoma reached the NCAA Tournament Final Four.
Rose's Return
After missing the first seven games nursing a minor injury, the Mean Green's all-conference junior guard Roosevelt Smart returned on Saturday versus Saint Peter's. Smart, who set the single-season school record for points and three-pointers last year, came off the bench and played 25 minutes against the Peacocks and scored 13 points and made three three-pointers.
Last year versus Oklahoma, Smart led UNT with 15 points and was 5-of-10 from deep.
Time Trailing
In Saturday's game versus Saint Peter's, the Mean Green trailed for a season-high six minutes and 49 seconds. Prior to Saturday, UNT hadn't trailed in a game for more than three minutes and three seconds.
On Saturday they trailed the Peacocks for the first four minutes of the game.
Early in the overtime period on Tuesday versus Maine, the Black Bears took a two-point lead. Up until then, North Texas had led for 196 consecutive minutes and 32 seconds of game action dating back four games on Nov. 10 in Hawaii versus Portland.
In total, UNT has only trailed this season for 12 minutes and 13 seconds all year, which means they've either led or have been tied for 96 percent of the season so far.
