DENTON – North Texas cross country competes at the NCAA South Central Regional Friday at the Dale Watts course hosted by Texas A&M for the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championship with the women's 6k beginning at 9:15 a.m. and the men's 10k following at 10:15 a.m.
The top two teams in each race advance along with the top four individuals not associated with a qualifying team to the NCAA Championship. Each school in the meet can only compete with seven runners as the top five finishers from a school compile their team score.
The Mean Green men, who captured the Conference USA championship two weeks ago, enter the race ranked sixth in the South Central Region. C-USA First Teamers Florian Lussy, Tim Jones, and Jack Beaumont look to lead the Mean Green. Beaumont returns as the top UNT finisher from a year ago where he concluded in 27thplace.
A season ago, the men landed in 11thplace. In 2014, UNT compiled their highest finish at the regional with a fourth place outing.
"We are excited to be racing at regionals coming off of the conference meet," Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "This is our first 10k of the year, and it will be tough, cold, and muddy conditions, which helps us."
Rea Iseli, a C-USA First Team honoree, will spearhead the Mean Green women.
"We are looking forward to getting another crack at this course,"Williams said. "We came here a month ago, and I think we have improved a lot in the last few weeks."
Last year, the UNT women finished just inside the top 10 in the ninth position. The 2014 season marked the team's best performance with an eighth place finish.
Arkansas men and women occupy the top spot in the regional rankings, while Texas sits at number two in both.
