GAME NOTES
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The North Texas men's basketball team will play its first game in 10 days on Tuesday when they visit New Mexico and play in the Lobos' Pit.
The Mean Green (10-1) are coming off a dramatic double-digit comeback over UT Arlington. UNT had a 17-2 run to end the game to win it 63-61. A well needed 10-day rest might be exactly what the Mean Green needed as they play UNM (5-4) in its final road non-conference game of the year.
While UNT has been resting, this will be the Lobos third game this week. New Mexico beat Central Arkansas by 12 at home on Sunday and on Tuesday of last week lost to Colorado at home despite leading for over 32 minutes.
North Texas is 0-2 all-time versus New Mexico and on Tuesday will have last played them 28 years and one day ago. The Mean Green are 10-1 for the first time since the 1976-77 season and will be looking to pick up 11 non-conference wins for the first time since the 2010-11 team. A win Tuesday would also be the first time North Texas had three road non-conference wins since the 2010-11 season and improve head coach Grant McCasland's all-time non-conference record at UNT to 23-9.New Mexico's Pit will not be easy, though. Lobo fans typically sell out the Pit, which is a few years older than the Mean Green's Pit and slightly bigger. Over 11,000 fans were in attendance last week to see the Lobos play Colorado. In preparation for the loud crowd noise, the Mean Green practiced this week with simulated crowd noise during part of the practices.
Tuesday's tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. CT and will be aired on TheMW.com or can be heard on the radio on KNTU 88.1 FM, KHYI 95.3 or by using the TuneIN app if you're out of the area. The voice of the Mean Green Dave Barnett and Hank Dickenson will be on the call.
IMPROVED FREE THROWS
In its last five games, North Texas is shooting 75.8 percent (72-95) at the free throw line. It's a drastic improvement from the 66 percent the Mean Green shot in the first six games prior.
BACK IN THE STARTING LINEUP
Since being inserted in the starting lineup on Dec. 5 at Indiana State, Michael Miller leads the team in scoring with 14.0 ppg and is third in rebounds 5.0 per game. North Texas is 2-0.
BEST IN C-USA
North Texas' Zachary Simmons' 66.3 field goal percentage ranks first in Conference USA by 5.7 percent ahead of WKU's Charles Bassey.
Umoja Gibson leads C-USA in three-point shooting at 44.0 percent and leads by a slim 1.7 percent margin over UTSA's Keaton Wallace of UTSA.
