DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team earned a season-high No. 41 NCAA Net Ranking on Wednesday. With the ranking, they remain easily the highest-ranked Conference USA team as Old Dominion checks in at No. 70 as the second-highest ranked C-USA team.
As the Mean Green (12-1) head into conference play, starting Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Rice (5-8), they also carry with them a three top-25 national votes in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll.
UNT features one of the nation's top defenses, holding its first 13 opponents to just 59.8 points per game, which ranks 12th in the nation as of Wednesday.
Offensively, North Texas is the only team in the country that has six players averaging 10 or more points per game. Redshirt freshman Umoja Gibson leads the team with an average of 13.0 while Ryan Woolridge (12.4), Michael Miller (11.5), Zachary Simmons (11.3), Roosevelt Smart (10.3) and Jorden Duffy (10.2) round out the other five. Multiple schools, including Louisiana Tech, have five guys but UNT is the only school with six.
Even though the Mean Green's top-two three-point shooters from a season ago — Smart and DJ Draper — have only made a combined total of 31 three-pointers and rank individual fourth and fifth on the team in three-pointers made, the Mean Green as a team are on pace to break last season's program record-setting mark of 302 total three-pointers.
Through 13 games, UNT has made 18-more three-pointers this season than last year at this point in the season.
The Mean Green's Ryan Woolridge has been on the team's stat leader this season. He is the only player in C-USA averaging 10+ points per game, 5+ rebounds per game and 5+ assists per game. Woolridge ranks in the top 10 in eight different league statistical categories.
