DENTON --The North Texas men's basketball team's 2018-19 Conference USA schedule has been released. The defending College Basketball Invitational champions will host at least seven conference games, three of which are against teams that finished in the top four of last season's standings.
Playing under a new conference scheduling format, North Texas will play travel partner Rice once at home and once on the road. They will play every other team in the league once over the first 14 games of the conference schedule. During the first 14 games, they will host last season's regular season champion Middle Tennessee on Jan. 26, last season's C-USA Tournament champion Marshall on Feb. 7 and on Feb. 9 will host Western Kentucky who finished third in last season's standings and reached the semifinals of the 2018 NIT.
The Mean Green will host their first conference game on Jan. 3 versus Louisiana Tech then take on Southern Miss in the Super Pit two days later.
Rice comes to town on Jan. 19 followed by UAB on Jan. 24. In its first 14 games, North Texas' longest road trip is just two games, which they do three times: Jan. 10-12 at UTEP and UT-San Antonio, Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at Old Dominion and Charlotte and Feb. 14-16 at Florida Atlantic and Florida International.
The Mean Green open their conference schedule on Saturday Dec. 29 at Rice.
At the conclusion of the first seven weeks, teams will be placed in one of three groups based on conference standings through the first 14 games of league action. The teams will be divided into two groups of five (1-5 and 6-10) and a group of four (11-14). During the final three weeks, teams will play within their respective grouping for the last four games of conference play. Home and away games within the groups will be determined by a preset formula.
Once all 18 games have been completed, the top 12 teams based on final league standings will be seeded in the conference tournament. Teams will be guaranteed seeding within their respective group. For example, if a program lands in the second group (6-10), it will seed no higher than six and no lower than 10 in the tournament field.
The 2019 C-USA Basketball Championships will once against be held in the Mean Green's backyard in Frisco, on March 13-16, at Ford Center at The Star.
Times and broadcasts for games will be determined at a later date.
