DENTON —The North Texas women's basketball team has released its 2018-19 Conference USA schedule.
The Mean Green, who reached the semifinals of the 2018 C-USA Tournament, will play on the road in five of their first seven conference games and will also play defending conference tournament champion Western Kentucky twice.
The Mean Green are coming off its best season in 16 years. The Mean Green had its first winning season in 12 years, won 17 games and reached the semifinals of a conference tournament for the first time since 2002 when head coach Jalie Mitchell was a senior at UNT.
The Mean Green reached the semifinals of last season's conference tournament after beating Louisiana Tech for the first time in program history. North Texas begins its conference schedule on the road at LA Tech on Jan. 3. The Mean Green opened last season's conference schedule at LA Tech and also on Jan. 3.
Five of UNT's first seven games are on the road and four of those five are against opponents who finished in the top five of last year's standings.
After playing at the Lady Techsters, North Texas travels to Southern Miss on Jan. 5. They then host UTEP and UT-San Antonio on Jan. 10 and 12 but then travel to Rice on Jan. 19, to UAB on Jan. 24 and to Middle Tennessee on Jan. 26.
In last season's standings, Middle Tennessee finished fifth, LA Tech fourth, Rice third and UAB is the defending regular season champion.
Other than Rice, the Mean Green only play those three other teams once.
This will be the third straight year UNT will travel to Middle Tennessee but not host the Blue Raiders.
After the three-game road trip in late January, the Mean Green return home on Jan. 31 to face Old Dominion, who they beat twice last year. They then host Charlotte on Feb. 2. UNT beat Charlotte at home in its only regular season meeting last year. It was the first time in program-history they had beaten the 49ers. They then proceeded to beat Charlotte in the first round of the 2018 C-USA Tournament.
North Texas' final home stand is its longest of the season, including its non-conference schedule. The Mean Green play four consecutive home games from Feb. 14 through March 2. They begin the four games against Florida Atlantic, then they host Florida International, Rice and play their final home game of the year against WKU.
For the first time since joining C-USA in 2013, the Mean Green will play WKU twice in a season. On Feb. 9, UNT travels to Bowling Green, Kentucky, for the first time in three years. The Lady Toppers have won back-to-back C-USA Tournament titles and won three of the last four C-USA Tournament championships.
The Mean Green return its starting lineup from their 2018 C-USA Tournament run, including Terriell Bradley who was named first-team all-conference last year after she scored 578 points (18.6 ppg), the third-most points in a single season in program history and the most in 32 seasons.
