LOUISVILLE - North Texas tight end Kelvin Smith was named to the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse, Thursday, the Louisville Sports Commission announced.
Smith, one of the most versatile players on the Mean Green roster, caught 27 passes in 2017 for 264 yards, while also serving as a key member of several special teams units. Smith is expected to again be a big component of the Mean Green across many units in 2018. A unique inclusion on this list, Smith is not your typical candidate as a return-man. However, his impact on the punt coverage team, kickoff return as the lead blocker, field goal protect as well as a tight end and h-back offensively, can be felt all over the field.
The Hornung Award is presented annually by the Louisville Sports Commission to college football's most versatile player.
Nicknamed The Golden Boy, Hornung was a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Notre Dame in 1956 and the NFL's Most Valuable Player with the Green Bay Packers, whose versatility earned him enshrinement in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. At Notre Dame, Hornung played every position in the offensive backfield, handled punting and placekicking duties, returned kickoffs, and started at safety on defense. He set an NFL single-season scoring record for the champion Green Bay Packers in 1961 that stood for 46 years.
