DENTON – North Texas women's golf head coach Michael Akers announced a significant addition to his coaching staff Monday, adding former professional golfer Krista Puisite as a graduate assistant coach.
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of Krista to our staff," Akers said. "I have known Krista for about 11 years. She played for me at my previous program and was the model student/athlete. Her GPA was 3.8 during her undergrad and on the golf course she was incredible. I also never remember her complaining about anything in four years. Our resources were limited and looking back what we accomplished there was truly amazing."
Puisite, a native of Latvia, has had a decorated playing career, highlighted by 2008, 2011 and 2012 Latvian Amateur championships. Additionally, she won the 2008 and 2009 Latvian Junior Amateur. Collegiately, Puisite played for Akers at Texas State, where she was a WGCA Honorable Mention All-American, and was also named to the second team as a CoSIDA All-American.
"I look forward to Krista sharing her experiences in college golf and pro golf with our current team," Akers said. "She nearly led the country in birdies her senior year and she didn't hit the ball particularly long. Her short game is very solid so she will most likely take over that aspect of structured practice."
Puisite turned professional in 2014 and won her first two events on the Suncoast Tour. Additionally, Puisite competed as recently as 2017 on the Symetra Tour and also competed on The Golf Channel's Big Break Myrtle Beach, season 22 of the show.
"From a recruiting standpoint this hire is a homerun," Akers said. "When you look at someone who played for me and improved every year it certainly helps in the communication with prospects. Krista has toured UNT and our facilities and was impressed. We look forward to continuing to rewrite the women's golf record book at UNT."
The Mean Green open the fall season Aug. 31 with the Duel at Dornick against Murray State.
