DENTON – Conference USA announced Monday that three North Texas volleyball players earned Player of the Week honors. Sophomore Valerie Valerian was named the Offensive Player of the Week, senior Karley York was named the Setter of the Week and Rhett Robinson was named the Co-Freshman of the Week.
The Mean Green began the season 3-0 for the first time since 2012 and claimed the North Texas Invitational title without conceding a set. North Texas recorded two of the program's top-10 single-match attack percentages, including a .526 mark in the season opener against Nicholls.
A member of the all-tournament team, Valerian picked up right where she left off in 2017, extending her streak of matches with double-digit kills to nine matches. She led the team in kills (37), kills per set (4.11), attack percentage (.453) and aces (5). Valerian paced the squad with 13 kills at a .600 clip against Northeastern and tied a career high with three aces against Kent State.
"We've been working really hard on different shots and being aggressive with our swings," Valerian said. "I'm grateful to see the hard work paying off, but I couldn't have done it without my team and Karley putting up the ball."
Named the tournament MVP, York averaged 12.67 assists per set. She dazzled in the season debut with 41 assists (13.67 per set) and a pair of kills and aces. Against Kent State, York tallied a career-high four block assists and fell one dig shy of a double-double.
"We obviously had some good offensive numbers, having outside hitters win Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week," York said. "It was pretty easy as a setter to know who to set the ball to, because I knew in any situation, they could put the ball down."
Robinson enjoyed a successful debut weekend, averaging 3.11 kills per set in her first three matches. She was errorless with eight kills on 10 attempts in the season opener and tied Valerian for the team lead with 12 kills against Kent State. Averaging nearly four points a set, Robinson tallied three aces and assisted on seven blocks.
"It's really special," Robinson said. "It feels good to see all our hard work coming through. The three of us getting these awards shows how much we've improved."
Robinson, Valerian, York and the rest of the Mean Green return to action 6 p.m. Tuesday against No. 12 Baylor at the Ferrell Center in Waco.
