DENTON - On a relatively mild Friday morning, the North Texas football team opened camp with its first practice in preparation for the 2018 season.
North Texas had what head coach Seth Littrell said was the best first day of camp since his arrival prior to the 2016 season.

Some observations from day one:
- Junior quarterback Mason Fine (Peggs, Oklahoma) has become more vocal out on the practice field, as evidenced by his presence Friday.
- Senior corner Nate Brooks (Whitehouse, Texas) was a key fixture throughout the day, making plays in one-on-ones, the 7-on-7's and during the team period, including a pair of pass break-ups toward the end of the day.
- Freshman wide receiver Roderic Burns (Houston) made a couple of nice catches, but none better than when he hauled in a fade in the back corner of the end zone over his defender.
- Sophomore corner Cam Johnson (Houston) made a big play during the 7-on-7 session, intercepting a pass along the near sideline by jumping the route.
- Redshirt sophomore running back DeAndre Torrey (Gautier, Mississippi) busted a big run through the middle during the team portion of practice.
- Freshman wide receiver Jyaire Shorter (Killeen, Texas) made a difficult leaping catch on the sideline, outcompeting the man in coverage during team.
- Redshirt junior running back Christian Hosley (San Antonio) had a huge blitz pickup from a free corner, which afforded freshman quarterback Kason Martin (Manvel, Texas) the time to connect with redshirt junior tight end Kelvin Smith (Spring, Texas) on an out route
