9/1/2018 9:05:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
MALIBU, Calif. – Offensive struggles continued to haunt North Texas in its second match of the Asics Classic as Pepperdine defeated the Mean Green 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-22) Saturday night at the Firestone Fieldhouse. UNT hit just .089 in the match with 27 kills and 17 attack errors.
For the third straight match, Valerie Valerian led the team in kills and recorded double-digit digs with seven and 11, respectively. However, Valerian accounted for seven of the Mean Green's 17 attack errors on her 36 swings.
Despite four Valerian kills in the first set, North Texas recorded a -.023 attack percentage in the frame. After the Waves jumped out to an 8-2 lead, the Mean Green used a 3-0 run to pull within four at 13-9, but Pepperdine closed the set on a 12-3 run.
North Texas bounced back in set two, committing just two errors in the frame and hitting .304. However, the Waves countered with 18 kills at a .552 clip. The back-and-forth second frame saw 11 tie scores and three lead changes, with the last coming on a Tarah Wylie kill to put the Waves ahead 17-16. Pepperdine did not look back, cruising to a 25-18 set win.
The two schools traded leads four more times in the final set as the Mean Green showed signs of salvaging a sweep, but the Waves' attack proved to be too much for North Texas down the stretch.
