#NFLMeanGreen: The NFL Season Is Here
9/5/2018 9:27:00 PM | Football
DENTON -Â The National Football League's season is upon us, and it is again time to revisit those in the league that once called Denton home in 2018's first regular season installment of #NFLMeanGreen.
As the season kicks off, two former Mean Green players are on active rosters and are ready to get their 2018 campaigns started, while a third, Jeffery Wilson, earned a spot on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad. New Orleans Saints linebacker Craig Robertson enters his seventh season in the NFL and third in the Big Easy, while fullback Jamize Olawale begins his first season with the Dallas Cowboys after spending the first six years of his career in Oakland with the Raiders. Dallas acquired Olawale this past offseason via trade.
Robertson's Saints open 2018 at home against NFC South foe Tampa Bay on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 12 p.m. CT at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The game will be broadcast live on Fox, as Robertson looks to build on a season that saw him post 80 total tackles (53 solo), two sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble. The Saints won the division and reached the NFC Divisional round of the playoffs.
Olawale's Cowboys begin their season on the road, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte when they take on the Carolina Panthers, also Sunday, at 3:25 p.m. on Fox. Olawale carried nine times for 43 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 33 yards as a Raider in 2017. Dallas is hopeful Olawale can be a factor in helping pave the way for Ezekiel Elliott as the Cowboys look to rebound off a frustrating 9-7 2017 season.
Wilson worked his way onto the 49ers practice squad with a strong showing in preseason. Signed originally as an undrafted free agent, Wilson had an uphill battle to make the roster that had newly-inked free agent feature back Jerick McKinnon, backup Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert, who is a special teams standout, already entrenched on the depth chart. Wilson had an opportunity to show what he could do when McKinnon and Breida both went down with injuries early in the preseason, but when the 49ers signed veteran Alfred Morris, it all but sealed his fate on making the original 53-man roster. McKinnon was recently diagnosed with a torn ACL and is expected to miss the season, so should any of the other backs go down with an injury or not perform to expectation, Wilson has a good chance to possibly earn the call to the active roster. He carried 19 times for 61 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.
