DENTON – North Texas track and field heads to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Collegiate Invitational hosted by New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center Jan. 18-19.
"We are taking our select team to Albuquerque this weekend," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "We are looking to continue to improve as the level of competition increases. This week's events will be on a banked track, so it will be a little different for the runners than last weekend. But it should provide opportunity to put up faster times."
The meet begins Friday with field events scheduled for 4 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m. On Saturday, field events begin at 9:30 a.m. with running following at 10 a.m.
Brock Hottel broke a 10-year school record in pole vault with a mark of 5.20 meters. "Hottel looks to be the real deal. He missed the bar just shy of his outdoor personal best," Sheffield said.
At Kansas State, Breanna Eckels received first place in long jump while also setting a personal record in that event as well as the 60-meter dash. "Eckels continued to improve her jumping and sprinting. She had two big fouls that were longer than the current school record."
In women's weight throw, Jaleisa Shaffer, Haley Walker, and Ashlynn Smart each performed well to begin their season. "The women weight throwers all had monster performances well over their 2018 personal records. Smart threw three meters over her 2018 person best and a whopping five meters (almost 16 feet) beyond her opener last year."
Matthew Morgan earned third-place in the 3,000-meter run for North Texas. "Morgan continues to pace the long distance runners. He showed nice improvement over last year's opening personal record."
Darien Porter and Joseph Squire each grabbed first-place accolades at the invite. "Porter and Squire also added to the team scores with personal best wins in the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles.
"Our coaches have continued to stress preparation and execution to our young team. One of our goals this indoor season is increase confidence in themselves and to trust the process," Sheffield said.
