DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team earned a program-best No. 36 national ranking in Monday's NCAA NET Ranking after a pair of victories over conference foes last week. They also received a season-high nine votes in this week's USA Today Coaches poll.
The Mean Green improved their record to a school-best 15-1 overall with their 65-62 win over Southern Miss on Saturday. UNT was bumped up from 39 to 36 following the win.
The NCAA announced in August of last year that the RPI would no longer be used in the Division I men's basketball selection process and instead they'd beat using "NET". The new metric takes the following into account: game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency and the quality of wins and losses, using the existing quadrant system.
The Mean Green's No. 36 national NET ranking is by far the best in Conference USA. Old Dominion is the next highest ranked C-USA team at No. 76. Louisiana Tech, who UNT beat on Thursday, is third at No. 107.
They are the No. 4 ranked team in Texas in both the NET ranking and Coaches Poll.
In addition to being ranked No. 36, North Texas has been projected to reach the NCAA Tournament by ESPN's Joe Lunardi, Fox Sports and NCAA's Andy Katz. The Mean Green last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2010.
North Texas is on the road this week. They travel to UTEP on Thursday for an 8:00 p.m. CT tip-off in El Paso. They then head to UT San Antonio on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. CT start. Both games will be aired on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Radio Network.
North Texas is one win shy of surpassing its regular-season win total from a year ago with still 16 regular season games remaining.
