DENTON – North Texas cross country will be back in action Saturday when they travel to College Station to compete in the second annual Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M.
Â
Competition will get underway at 9 a.m. with the men's 8,000-meter race followed by the women's 6,000-meter at 9:45 a.m. Fans can check in on live results using this link.
Â
"We are excited to go and run down at Texas A&M," head coach Kevin Williams said. "There are a lot of teams from in and out of our region and so it'll be great to see some new competition."
Â
The men, who have been hit with the injury bug during the 2019 season will look to bounce back after a 18th place team finish at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Â
"On the men's side we're thin because we've run into a lot of bad luck in terms of injuries," Williams said. "But I am excited to see how the young athletes can step up."
Â
The Mean Green will look for a strong race from senior Florian Lussy who is coming off of his first action of 2019 at the Chile Pepper, where he placed 30th individually out of 304 runners.
Â
North Texas checks in at number 10 in week four's USTCCCA South Central Regional Rankings.
Â
The field for the men's race includes nine fellow South Central Region teams who also check into the regional rankings: Texas A&M (3), Rice (5), McNeese State (8), UT-Arlington (9), Baylor (11), Texas State (12), LSU (13), Abilene Christian (14) and Stephen F. Austin (15).
Â
North Texas' women, coming off of a tough 22nd place team finish in Fayetteville two weekends ago will also feature a young contingent of runners, some running in their first 6,000-meter race of their collegiate careers.
Â
"The women are young as well," Williams added. "However we've had great consistency in training and they're excited for the challenge."
Â
Sophomore Aubrey Schmidt has led the way for the Mean Green women, finishing first on the team in all three meets to start this season.
Â
The women's field will feature 12 of the top-15 teams out of the South Central Region: Texas (2), Texas A&M (3), Baylor (6), Rice (7), LSU (8), Stephen F. Austin (9), McNeese State (10), Abilene Christian (11), UTRGV (12), UT-Arlington (13), Texas A&M – CC (14) and SMU (15).
