FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas. – The North Texas men's basketball travels to Arkansas on Tuesday to play its second consecutive big non-conference road game. Tip-off at Bud Walton Arena is set for 7:00 pm. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN's SEC Network+ and on the the radio on the Mean Green Sports Network (KHYI 95.3 FM, KGAF 1580 AM , KNTU 88.1 FM) or on the TuneIn Radio app.
The Mean Green (1-1) are just a few days removed from taking No. 25 VCU to the wire in Richmond, Virginia.
After staging a double-digit second half comeback, UNT took a one-point lead with five minutes remaining in the game. The two teams traded blows from there on out, however, the Rams (2-0) — the A10 favorites would prevail with a three-pont win, 59-56.
North Texas redshirt senior DJ Draper came off the bench for the Mean Green and stepped up big-time. The team's most experienced player hit two late 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 12 points. It was just the second-time Draper had ever led the team in scoring. Through two games, Draper leads Conference USA in 3-point field goal percentage of players who have attempted at least 10 shots. Draper is 7-for-10 on the year from deep.
Rebounding has been a key point of emphasis for the Mean Green this season who during the offseason added considerable size. In a hostile environment , UNT matched the nationally ranked Rams on the boards as each team grabbed 31.UNT turned its 12 offensive rebounds into 16 points while VCU who also grabbed 12 offensive rebounds could only muster up seven second-chance points.
"We felt like we gave ourselves a chance to win and we're extremely disappointed that we didn't," head coach Grant McCasland said after Friday's loss at VCU. "I was proud of our guys' fight in the second half. Credit to VCU for being tremendous and tough and getting to the foul line when they needed to and making big shots."
On Tuesday, North Texas will be aiming for its first ever win over the Razorbacks (1-0) in program history. Arkansas opened the season with a 91-43 win over C-USA foe Rice. Along with playing UNT on Tuesday, Arkansas travels to Western Kentucky on Dec. 7. The Razorbacks are under new head coach Eric Musselman.
