DENTON – On the heels of one of the best stretches of play in program history, UNT head women's golf coach Michael Akers is adding to his roster with the signing of Shreya Pal for next season.
Pal, who will graduate high school in 2020 in India, will join the Mean Green next fall to hopefully help continue the ascent of the program on the national scale. The highest ranking in program history was achieved by the 2010-2011 team when it got to No. 50 in the national ranking. Following the recent fall season, UNT sits at No. 53, heading into the spring.
Akers said he believes Pal is a great fit to keep the upward momentum going when she gets to Denton next year.
"We are excited Shreya is joining our program next fall," Akers said. "She is exactly the type of student, golfer and person we are looking for. I believe I put more time into this recruiting class than any other in my coaching career."
Akers has been watching Pal for more than two years when she has played in tournaments in the United States, where she had solid showings along with several strong finishes in India and Asia.
She had a third-place finish at the IJGA World Stars of Junior Golf in 2018 in Las Vegas and was 13th out of 109 golfers at the FCG Callaway World Championship in California back in July – both tournaments Akers attended. She's also notched several top-5 finishes in India and Thailand, including a loss in a playoff at the 18th True International Junior Golf Championship in April in Thailand.
"I was very impressed with the improvement she's displayed over the last 12 months," Akers said. "After meeting her and speaking to her, I really felt she was a great fit for us. She has competed in pro events in India, as an amateur, and really showed she can play tough courses against good competition."
