DENTON – North Texas volleyball faces a tough home test to close the regular season. The Mean Green (15-10, 9-4) face UTSA at noon at the Mean Green Volleyball Center. The Roadrunners (15-10, 8-4) have won two straight, and currently have a 4-5 road record this season.
The Mean Green will be coming off two losses. Saturday's match will have big implications for Conference USA tournament seeding. North Texas currently holds the three seed with UTSA as the four seed. A win on Saturday will lock North Texas in as the three seed.
"Our girls just have to get over some of the things that have happened," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "For us it's all about putting ourselves in position, in each set, to have success. Sometimes we just aren't even in a position to have success in each set, so our goal is to get into those positions on Saturday."
North Texas has been in the midst of finding a solid identity down the stretch. After Kaliegh Skopal was shut down for the season with a Guillain-Barré syndrome diagnosis, it has been up to sophomore setter Kailyn O'Neal to step in. After losing Sarah Hauessler to injury during the early stages of conference play, the Mean Green have been forced to adjust.
Palileo believes his team is still in the process of adjusting.
"I think we've reacted fine," Palileo said. "We've practiced hard, but I think in the back of their minds they have a built-in excuse for why we're not winning. I don't accept that. No one cares what we're going through, that we have players missing. People are just going to keep playing. UTSA is a good team, we've got to match them with our intensity and our effort."
The two teams last faced off on September 23 last season. UTSA won 3-0 with 51 kills. Valerie Valerian had 14 kills while Rhett Robinson added 13. The Roadrunners lead the all-time series 7-5 dating back to 2002. In C-USA play, UTSA leads the all-time series 5-4, but has never won in Denton in conference play.
At the conclusion of Saturday's game, North Texas' tournament seeding will be known. Live stats will be available online. Follow along with @MeanGreenVB on Twitter for live updates. Make sure you arrive early on Saturday. Prior to the game, North Texas Athletics will honor Palileo for becoming the winningest head coach in program history which he achieved on November 1 against FIU. Tickets are available online.
