NEW ORLEANS – The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, has named senior Mason Fine as one of eight "Stars of the Week." College football fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for what they think was the best performance from this past weekend. When voting closes on Thursday at 11 a.m. (Central), the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
Fine, a Peggs, Oklahoma, native completed 24 of 39 passes for 332 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns in a 52-26 win over UTEP. Fine's seven touchdowns broke his previous career-high that he set last week at Charlotte when he threw five. He is the first Conference USA quarterback to throw for seven touchdowns in a game since Marshall's Rakeem Cato (Nov. 28, 2014). His seven touchdowns passes also broke the Apogee Stadium record for most touchdown passes in a single game that was originally set in the stadium's first game back in 2011 when Houston's Case Keenum threw for 5 against the Mean Green. Fine's seven scoring tosses are the second most in any game this year across the FBS. The senior moved into 36th all-time in the NCAA with 12,026 career passing yards, passing the likes of Russell Wilson, Brady Quinn, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer and Byron Leftwich. Fine currently sits at 91 career touchdown passes, which leads all active FBS players and ranks 43rd all-time.
